Dowry allegations: man, beating parent, sexually assaulted wife in Ludhiana

A Delhi-based man and his relatives were sentenced on Saturday for harassing, beating and sexually assaulting his wife for dowry.

It is alleged that the accused demanded a Mercedes S-Class as a dowry and when she refused, the accused threw her and their two sons out of the house. Later, when they met to resolve the case, the accused allegedly asked for ₹ 50 lakh and attempted to strangle her with his duppatta and also locked her in a room. She said her husband and relatives sexually assaulted her, after which she passed out and was rushed to hospital by her parents.

An FIR was registered on September 20 and the case was registered after an investigation.

The 38-year-old victim was married in 2003 through a marriage agency. She alleged that soon after the wedding, her husband and family started harassing her for the dowry. Her parents gave them expensive gifts of gold and silver on different occasions, but the accused continued to harass her. The woman’s parents live in Ludhiana.

Deputy Inspector Amritpal Singh, who is investigating the case, said police convicted the accused under sections 323 (willfully causing injury), 341 (undue hardship), 354-A (sexual harassment), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 498-A (husband or relative of the husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 34 (act performed by several people in pursuit of a common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. A hunt is on for the arrest of the accused.
