NO further action will be taken against Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner (CPC) Steve Turner after an allegation of theft was dropped by the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).

The IOPC rejected the allegations of malicious historical theft and illegal submission of election documents, which were “completely false,” Turner said.

The CCP, which was elected to the post in May, said it believed the allegations were made to damage its reputation.

He said the allegations caused “incredible amounts of stress and anger for me and my family.”

Investigations into a historical sexual assault allegation are still ongoing.

In a statement posted to social media on Monday, Mr Turner said: “Today I can officially announce that the Independent Police Conduct Office has said it will not take any action against me regarding the allegations of malicious historical theft made by a Labor MP and another “anonymous” source.

“They also confirmed that the claim of a former Welsh Labor CCP that I had acted illegally when submitting my election papers was also completely false.

“I believe these allegations were designed to seriously damage my reputation.

“While there is still one serious allegation pending which needs to be fully investigated, I have no doubts that the process will deliver the right result and prove my innocence.

“At this point it will be interesting to see how the Labor leader, members of his shadow cabinet, MPs, local Labor members, activists, some Cllrs and Echo of the North choose to respond.

“All of these allegations have caused incredible amounts of stress and upheaval for me and my family, as well as a significant amount of resources to conduct the investigations which have now been dismissed.

“For now, the most important thing for me is to thank everyone who has supported us so far. With this continued support, I will continue in the role I am proud to occupy and I will do the work for which you elected me despite the concerted witch hunt that was orchestrated against me.

“Steve and his family.”
