WAUKESHA, Wisconsin – Darrell Brooks’ mother broke her silence in a letter to the media on Wednesday, attributing the tragedy to the lack of mental health services for her son, according to a news report.

Brooks was living with his mother, Dawn Woods, 62, when he plowed his red Ford Escape in an annual Christmas parade on November 21, killing six people and injuring more than 60, court records show.

Brooks, 39, suffered from a mental illness and had been on medication since childhood, according to the letter and court documents.

“Institutions that are equipped and staffed with trained staff are what is needed, along with resources in the communities where people with mental illness live,” the letter said. “Prison is not the solution, because they are released into society sicker than they were when they entered. We all see how tragedy this can be.”

In a widely criticized decision, a Milwaukee junior prosecutor asked for a $ 1,000 cash bond after he was arrested for allegedly running over his ex-girlfriend with his SUV, leaving a tire mark on his left leg. Woods posted his son’s bail on November 5, and 16 days later he allegedly used the same vehicle to carry out the horrific attack on the revelers.

Milwaukee District Attorney John Chisholm called the bond “weakly weak” and launched an internal investigation into the decision.

“As a society we need to take mental illness seriously by fixing a failed system or suffering the consequences, as sad as it is to say that what happened in Waukesha will continue to happen across this country,” in one form or another with more innocent lives lost and grieving families and communities, ”Dawn wrote.

Brooks’ mother offered her condolences to the victims and the community of Waukesha.

“What was to be a joyful day has turned into a day of tragedy and sorrow – a day we wish with all our hearts would never have happened,” the letter says.

Five adult victims killed in the attack on the Waukesha parade. A sixth victim, this one a child, was announced in court on Tuesday.

She added that Brooks came from a “loving Christian family” and was the grandson of ministers.

The problems started when in adulthood it was determined that he no longer had a mental illness and his treatment was discontinued, according to Woods.
