Ludhiana, December 22

At a meeting of the Special Working Group (STF) for Buddha Nullah on Wednesday, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) was withdrawn due to the delay in commissioning effluent treatment plants communes (CETP) at Tajpur Road and Focal Point.

Municipal company Ludhiana was also criticized for failing to stop the Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes from dumping dairy waste into the Buddha Nullah, during the meeting.

The virtual meeting was chaired by STF Chairman and Namdhari Sect Leader Satguru Uday Singh. Local Government Principal Secretary AK Sinha, Commissioner MC Pradeep Kumar Sabharwal, Chief Engineer, PPCB, Ludhiana, Gulshan Rai and Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu were among others who attended the meeting.

Sukhwinder Singh, a representative of STF chairman Satguru Uday Singh, said the chairman of the working group questioned the PPCB on why two CETP at Tajpur Road and Focal Point had not been made operational until nowadays. The President also asked why the authorities concerned did not maintain the level of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) at 15 MLD CETP on Bahadurke Road. The BOD level was found to be high compared to the required level.

The president called on officials to find a solution to the problem of the scattered electroplating and dyeing industries, which have not been linked to CETP. Authorities were asked to compile a list of units that dump waste into MC’s sewer line.

The STF president also asked relevant officials why dairies located in MC jurisdiction and GLADA area are still polluting nullahs. The MC has not taken concrete steps to stop the dumping of dairy waste from the Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes.

MC officials shared information regarding the progress of Buddha Nullah’s Rs 650 crore rejuvenation project. The STF president asked officials to take the necessary steps to install an intermediate pumping station by finding suitable land near Gaughat gurdwara.

A PPCB official, Ludhiana, said the focal point’s CETP 40 MLD was operating at 50 percent of its capacity (20 MLD) and would be made fully operational within the next 10 days.

He said CETP 50 MLD on Tajpur Road would be made operational within the next 15-20 days.
