The Imo state government said on Tuesday that there was no iota of truth in Uche Nwosu’s claim that state governor Hope Uzodinma was involved in his arrest by the police.
State Information and Strategy Commissioner Declan Emelumba said Nwosu had misled the public.
He said this in responding to Nwosu’s claim that Uzodinma organized his arrest on Sunday at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Eziama Obaire, in the Nkwerre local government area.
Nwosu gave a press conference on Tuesday morning, recounting how he was arrested, taken to Abuja via Enugu airport, allegedly on the order of the state governor.
But Emelumba, in response, said that only time will tell whether Nwosu was innocent or not.
The statement read: “The attention of the Imo State government has been drawn to a spurious and baseless allegation of Uche Nwosu who was recently arrested by police, for a crime which has not yet been disclosed that the state government was behind his arrest.
“It’s a malicious concoction, which can only be invented by a drowning man.
“It is pitiful that rather than enter into a sobering reflection on his arrest, Nwosu, upon his release on bail, was pressed to allege without any evidence that his arrest was orchestrated by the government of Imo State.
“There is no truth to this allegation as it is a figment of his imagination. It is natural for a drowning man to hold on to whatever straw is available to save himself. But the spurious allegations and groundless is not the kind of drop that can save a drowning man.
“It’s quite curious that all over Imo State, it was only Uche Nwosu that the police targeted to arrest him in this way for no good reason?” Only time will tell.
“It should be noted that the government of Senator Hope Uzodinma does not believe in tyranny or anarchic behavior as it did when Uche Nwosu was de facto deputy governor of the state.
“This government believes in the rule of law and due process and would not attempt to usurp the constitutional responsibility of security agencies.
“However, we believe that over time the Imo people and even Nigerians will be informed by the relevant agencies who are the state bandits and the real reason for Uche Nwosu’s arrest.
“No blackmail and infantile vituperation against the government would erase the fact that the police have opened a case against Uche Nwosu and he will sooner or later give an account of his actions. One word should suffice for the wise.
