Why Idris Elba blamed Daniel Craig for the James Bond rumors

Some fans have campaigned for Idris Elba to play the next James Bond before Daniel Craig even stepped down from the role. And even after Craig retired, speculation about his involvement in James Bond continued. Elba, who has been talking about this gossip for years now, once blamed Craig himself for spreading the rumors.

Fans have yet to see Idris Elba put himself in 007. But Elba has revealed that he already plays a character who could potentially match Bond’s level of recognition and quality. For more than a decade now, Elba has played Detective John Luther on the BBC’s hit series Luther. Recently, a film based on the character was released on Netflix and received critical acclaim.

In an interview with Collider, Elba teased his enthusiasm for the film at the time. He also briefly explained how he thought Luther could possibly be in the same chat as James Bond someday.

“We have an incredible appetite to satisfy audiences who loved Luther in his current form, but also to bring him into a new sphere with the film version,” Elba said. “I don’t want to be controversial, but people think of me as Bond and that’s great. But I can’t wait for them to see me as Luther in this movie. Our ambition is to take him there.

Why Idris Elba blamed Daniel Craig for lingering James Bond rumors

There are times when Elba gets a little fed up with the constant discussions about playing the next James Bond. In an interview with Business Insider, the subject was brought up again.

“Are people still talking about it? Elbe asked.

When asked if Elba enjoyed the rumors or if he was done with them, he appeared to lean towards them.

“No, I don’t like it,” he replied.

Speaking with the British Film Institute in London, the star of The Suicide Squad felt that the lingering rumors could have squandered his chances of Bond.

“Honestly, it’s a rumor that’s really starting to eat up on its own,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “If there was any chance I could get Bond, here we go.”

He also cited James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, as the catalyst for these rumors.

“Daniel Craig actually sparked the rumor,” he joked. “About four years ago he said Idris Elba would be a great Leap, and then it started to spread. I blame Daniel.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Elba revealed that he would play Bond if asked. But that’s not a role he’s actively lobbied for.

“Of course if someone says to me ‘Do you want to play James Bond?’ I’d be like, Yeah! It’s fascinating to me. But it’s not something that I expressed, like, “Yeah, I wanna be the black James Bond,” Elba said.

However, Elba also revealed that he felt embarrassed by people saying there couldn’t be a Black Bond.

“You are just discouraged,” he said. “When you get people from a generational perspective, ‘It’s not possible.’ And it turns out that it really is the color of my skin. And then if I have it and it didn’t work, or it did, could it be because of the color of my skin? It’s a tough position to take when I don’t need it.
