The online giant announced Thursday it is raising the prices of Amazon Prime memberships, and part of the reason why is the National Football League.

Amazon is set to become the new (and exclusive) home for Thursday Night Football in 2022. Shelling out for the media rights (and the production costs that go along with the games) was cited by Amazon when it announced prices for Prime memberships are increasing $20 to $139 per year. It’s the first price hike for the Prime membership since 2018. Prime will pay about $1 billion annually for its football rights.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy discussed the price increase in a statement released Thursday. Per the Hollywood Reporter:

“We continue to feel optimistic and excited about the business as we emerge from the pandemic. When you combine how we’re staffing and scaling our fulfillment network to bring even faster delivery to more customers, the extraordinary growth of AWS with 40% year-over-year growth (and now a $71 billion revenue run rate), the addition of marquee new entertainment like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Thursday Night Football and a plethora of new capabilities that we’re building in areas like Alexa, Ring, Grocery, Pharmacy, Amazon Care, Kuiper, and Zoox, there’s a lot to look forward to in the months and years ahead.”

First order of business for Amazon’s NFL coverage is to line up talent to call the games. Amazon is eyeing NBC Sports’ Al Michaels and FOX Sports’ Troy Aikman as its broadcast team.
