Philly’s homicide numbers are heartbreaking, but don’t blame it on guns | letter

It is beyond past time to address the matter of crime in America; particularly regarding gun violence. For reference, as of April 5, there have been 125 homicides in the supposed City of Brotherly Love Philadelphia, 10 of which have been children.

It is heartbreaking to turn on the news or get an alert on your phone seeing a mass shooting or one or two people shot in Philly, Chicago, DC literally everyday. Or any other big metropolitan area on a daily basis. We have become numb to it as Americans and accepted it as reality.

Yet there is a response by some extremely irresponsible politicians to blame an inanimate object: the gun. An old lesson of cause of effect. The cause is a tragic story everyone knows about with the death of George Floyd, which led to cataclysmic riots, looting and violent protests in America and calls to defund the police. The effect was those calls were answered and crime soared. Including murder.

However, rational thinking would say all the disrespect and chastising of police caused many of the officers to retire or just quit.

Stop blaming guns start addressing mental health.
