MYSURU: Although the Mysuru district police have cracked the mystery behind several highway robberies in the past, the recent incident of assault and robbery has come to light after a lull. Recently, a footage of a car passenger being kidnapped on a national highway had gone viral. Though the victim or his family has not come forward to register a case, police have taken up a suo motu case and are probing. Police sources confirmed that they have identified the victim in the footage and have summoned him for questioning. He is yet to turn up for the investigation, they stated. Additional superintendent of police R Shivakumar told TOI that the district was quick to take up the suo motu case after the video went viral. “The investigation is under progress against unidentified abductors. The senior officer in the district said police have installed surveillance cameras at vantage points and at checkposts on the highways to monitor the suspicious movement of miscreants. It has helped cops solve many crimes,” he explained . An officer on condition of anonymity said all the highway-related incidents are invariably related to the robbing of huge and unaccounted amounts of money. “Since the money is acquired illegally, the victims too do not voluntarily turn up to file a complaint,” the offer added. This has been challenging for the police, but it has succeeded in solving a few cases in the past and in many cases, people from outside Karnataka are involved. The police investigation has revealed that organized crime syndicates are behind some of the crimes happening on the highways – 275 and 766 that pass through Mysuru district. The members, after learning about people carrying heavy cash and gold in vehicles, intercept, attack, and take away valuables from them. In the recent incident too, cops are suspecting a similar motive. As cops have intensified patrolling and have installed CCTVs, they are confident that they will find clues to uncover crime.
