Jimmy Kimmel bit during Quinta Brunson speech sparks backlash – The Hollywood Reporter

Not everyone was laughing as Jimmy Kimmel remained committed to his 2022 Emmys appearance during Quinta Brunson’s acceptance speech.

As presenters for Best Writing in a Comedy Series, Will Arnett dragged a seemingly passed out Kimmel onto the stage, with Arnett joking to the crowd that this is the “13th time in a row he’s been lost and he’s just walked into the meager margaritas there.” When Brunson took the stage to accept the award for her ABC series Abbott Elementary, which was her first-ever Emmy, Kimmel stayed on stage.

Arnett tried to push Kimmel aside to make room for the winner, with Brunson telling him, “Jimmy, wake up. I won.” Kimmel gave him a thumbs up but continued to lie on the stage throughout the speech, and it wasn’t until after Brunson ended that Arnett dragged him back. For his part, Brunson seemed like a good player, adding the late-night entertainer’s name to the end of his list of thanks.

Brunson spoke about the moment behind the scenes, saying “it didn’t bother me that much” but she wasn’t sure how netizens might feel. She explained that Kimmel had invited her for her first major late-night appearance and had previously told her that he considered Abbott Elementary to be one of television’s great comedies.

“I think at that point I was really happy that it was Jimmy up there,” she told reporters. “I sort of consider him one of the godfathers of comedy; I’m a huge Will Arnett fan, so I was captivated by the moment. I don’t know, tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him. I’ll be on his show on Wednesday, so I might punch him in the face. I do not know. We’ll see what happens.”

Clearly not all viewers of the ceremony appreciated Kimmel’s presence as Brunson delivered his heartfelt speech, with a number of social media users noting that it didn’t seem like a respectful decision to stay on. scene during his big moment.

“Jimmy Kimmel not moving to get out of Quinta Brunson’s way is a (shitty, selfish, bullshit) choice,” tweeted Andy Dehnart, secretary of the Television Critics Association.

Author and activist Ernest Owens tweeted: “I can’t lie, I’m still annoyed that Jimmy Kimmel’s boring ass is on the floor trying to distract from Quinta Brunson’s historic win.”

Other journalists also intervened. New York magazine’s E. Alex Jung wrote, “Kimmel better get rid of his ass for quinta.” Additionally, HuffPost Editor-in-Chief Philip Lewis wrote, “Jimmy Kimmel should have left the stage during Quinta’s speech. Very disrespectful.

Podcast host Sam Sanders tweeted, “Kimmel playing dead on the floor right next to a black woman accepting her rightful place in the future of television is such a scathing metaphor.”

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Kimmel’s team for comment. Footage of Kimmel being dragged offstage, which was not shown on TV, is below.
