In the Eagles vs. Cowboys Christmas Eve battle for seeding among division rivals, all cards were on the table except for the Hurts card. All the Eagles had to do was win one of their last three games to secure the first seed in the division and the conference. They will have to wait at least another week for that to happen.
Expectations were met and maybe even exceeded for the Eagles in the first quarter. They were already leading 3-0. Dak Prescott then threw a pick six to give them a 10-0 lead.
In the arms of a leaping defender
It was in stark contrast to the sixth sealing pick in last week’s game. This pickaxe was thrown directly into the leaping defender’s arms instead of being stolen upwards by the catcher. It was also the first quarter as opposed to overtime.
The Cowboys quarterback imposed his will on the next drive. A third rush down to move the chains was just the first bailout.
On the third down that followed, a blitzer summoned Prescotts inner-Roethlisberger, as he refused to leave the pocket. Like a man possessed, with a defender hanging pathetically from his leg, Dak fed the ball to Gallup for the first down.
The Cowboys wrapped up the practice by hitting it with Elliott, who has seen a recent resurgence. With his touchdown run against the Eagles, he’s now scored in eight straight games.
Shake the norm
Tony Pollards has been the man this season. With an average of more than five meters per carry, he was selected to participate in his very first Pro Bowl. This game, however, was a bit upset from the norm, as Pollards’ production was limited in the racing game. His six takes, however, were more in line with normality.
Another Pro Bowler, Ceedee Lamb shed a tear as he caught 10 passes for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns. He’s already topped his single-season highs with 1,207 yards and eight touchdowns.
As you would expect from these two teams, it was back and forth all day.
Gallup had a circus take with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. This once again brought the Cowboys back from a seven-point deficit.
With less than eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, a two-game losing streak left the Cowboys in dire straits. Dak stepped back and threw a miraculous 52-yard strike by TY Hilton on the 3rd and 30th. This commemorated Hilton’s first take as a Cowboy. And he wasn’t going to let us forget that.
Down six, after going all the way to the 20-yard line, Gardner Minshew was close to completing his comeback. The wind was pulled out of its sails on a 4th and long prayer thrown in a sea of end zone cover. Playing against Team Americas, his skills were on the national showcase for a future starting job. He had a big day with 355 yards, two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.
Despite the final score of 40-34, the defense on both sides of the pitch played hard all day. They’re two of the best teams in the NFL, and they really show it in this game.
They have to win twice
Either of these two teams could still be the number one seed in the division or even the NFC. The division and the conference are linked due to the Eagles’ record. That means for the Cowboys they have to win twice and they have to rely on the Eagles to lose twice. The 49ers are also considered.
The season boils down to the essentials. The playoff picture is starting to take shape. The suitors are almost done identifying the suitors. They are left to prevail for the last two weeks.
