Extremely cold temperatures, snow and winds across the United States were responsible for poor weather conditions in Bermuda during the Christmas holiday period.

The island experienced rain and winds late Thursday and Friday morning, followed by high winds and a cold front on Christmas Eve with heavy showers and thunderstorms.

At LF Wade International Airport from December 23 to 2 p.m. on December 28, 2022, 4.24 inches of precipitation was recorded.

Michelle Pitcher, Acting Director of the Bermuda Weather Service, said: A deep low pressure system, bringing extremely cold temperatures, snow and winds across the United States, pushed a cold front off the east coast of the United States during the afternoon and evening of December 23.

This sent a warm front ahead of it with rain and showers in our area late Thursday evening through Friday morning and also brought strong to gale force winds Friday morning through early afternoon .

The cold front arrived on Christmas Eve with heavier showers and thunderstorms as it stalled in our near west.

Christmas Day remained mostly dry after some scattered rain early in the morning, then the front returned to our area on Boxing Day bringing more rain. The front continued to drift over our area at times until Tuesday December 27th.

A low pressure center developed along the front early this morning and helped push the front across our region to the east with heavier showers, strong gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms. The anticyclone is then building from our northwest until this evening.

Ms Pitcher said the center of the high will move north over the next few days, bringing drier and sunnier conditions to the region.

She added: The next cold front is not expected until next Monday or Tuesday.

Bad weather caused some disruption for those traveling overseas.

Passengers were stranded on Christmas Day due to a delayed flight caused by storms in Canada.

Skyport said there were no local flight cancellations over the holiday, but the major Christmas Day delay saw the WestJet flight to Toronto land at 5.39pm instead of landing at 10pm 43.

A Skyport spokeswoman said: “Passengers are advised to keep in touch with their airline regarding any delays or potential changes to their flight status, particularly during what is considered the peak season for holiday travel.

Pre-holiday flights have also apparently been affected. Bermudian Valerie Adams spoke to Canadian news agency CBC after being stranded at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport following a major storm that affected parts of southwestern Ontario.

The story said she got stranded at the airport after landing on Thursday, December 22. She reported that her airline had not offered to pay for a hotel and that she had been left wandering around the airport trying to get answers from staff.

Residents of Pembroke were left without power on Boxing Day after a transformer exploded near West Pembroke School.

A Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: A call came in at 5.39pm from a burning pole near West Pembroke School.

A transformer had blown, igniting the pole and compromising the overhanging wires. A thread was in the way.

The road between West Park Lane and Princess Estate remained closed until the issue was resolved. There are no casualties. One aircraft and four personnel were present.

Motorists were diverted from Middle Road in Southampton this morning in the Five Star Island area due to a collapsed embankment.

A police spokeswoman said heavy rain caused the collapse, blocking the westbound lane and causing traffic delays.

Relevant government departments have been notified to attend and clean up the debris.
