Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has criticized Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte for failing to motivate his side to start games on a positive note in the Premier League.

Tottenham, who finished fourth with 71 points last campaign, currently sit fifth in the 2022-23 Premier League table with 30 points from 16 games. After a strong start to the current season, Conte’s side have recently embarked on a frustrating run that has seen them fall behind in nine straight top-flight matches.

Spurs resumed their Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw against Brentford at Gtech Community Stadium on Monday (December 26). Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg helped their side pull off a disastrous second-half comeback after losing two goals earlier.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Agbonlahor highlighted Tottenham’s defensive mistakes in the early stages of a contest. He precised :

“When we were players, if we conceded the first goal in a game, the manager was on you all week. He would tell you to go out and score the first goal. You go out and you’re there from the first minute , but Spurs can’t do that.”

Scolding Conte for his team’s shortcomings, Agbonlahor added:

“I have to blame Conte. I’m sorry, but he has experience, he should be on these players. They had six weeks in the World Cup, so go out and score the first goal what not wrong with you? You can’t afford to keep giving away goals to opposing teams.”

Asked about Spurs’ top four prospects, Agbonlahor replied:

“If they go away, he won’t sign a new contract. He will go, he will walk. Where would that leave Harry Kane as well? Kane won’t want to play in the Europa League. He’ll be like: ‘Come on, what’s this? what more do you want from me?’ He wants to play in the Champions League and win trophies, so it’s a great season for Spurs and their future.”

Tottenham are then set to face off with 12th-placed Aston Villa when they meet at home in the Premier League on Sunday January 1.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to nab Liverpool and PSG target Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina. Atletico Madrid and Sevilla are also interested in signing the midfielder.

Amrabat, 26, has been a regular in Fiorentina’s first team since joining from Club Brugge for a fee of around 16 million in 2020. So far he has made 78 appearances in all competitions for La Viola .
