The Witcher Showrunner Talks Henry Cavill’s Departure, Former Writer’s Allegations & More

[ad_1]

Over the past few months, two particular pieces of news have come seemingly out of nowhere and have shaken up The Witcher fandom a bit. We’re of course talking about Henry Cavills leaving after Season 3 with Liam Hemsworth taking over and former writer Beau DeMayos’ allegations that some of the writers actively disliked Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.

Now that The Witcher: Blood Origin promotional season is underway, showrunner Lauren Hissrich is starting to talk about it in interviews and on social media.

The Witcher showrunner is optimistic about the future

The biggest elephant in the room here is of course Henry Cavill leaving The Witcher after season 3 and being replaced by Liam Hemsworth. Speaking to TechRadar, Lauren Hissrich said this was a big deal for them too:

It’s the thing that there’s a lot of talk and rumors about and we completely understand why the fans are going for it. What I will say is please come back for the third season of The Witcher so we can keep doing it. Obviously, this [Cavills departure] is huge news.

She continued that thought in an interview with IGN, talking about the future with Liam Hemsworth: What excites me is that we allow this franchise to continue to grow, and that we get new energy and chemistry that we have not yet discovered. And for me, that’s part of the fun of television; you don’t know exactly where the adventure will end. So that’s something that really excites me.

A similar quote was directed to TheGamer regarding The Witcher’s post-Cavill chapter: I’m so excited for the viewers. I think it’s just a new chapter for us. And I think the new chapters bring new energy and people will find things to like. So yeah, personally, I’m really excited.

Speaking to Collider, Hissrich also gave an update on the Season 4 process: Honestly, I’m really excited for Witcher Season 4. I think it’s going to be fantastic. I am excited to begin. Were not there. So for now, I really want to focus on Blood Origin and all of this amazing work.

By the way, speaking of recasting, Lauren also reached out to Sam Woolf as Chris Fulton’s replacement as Rience in The Witcher Season 3. As we suspected, it was a scheduling conflict, as Lauren confirmed in her social media comments:

Chris Fulton was AMAZING and we were so sad (as was he) that the dates we needed him for didn’t match the movie he was making. Sam Woolf had some huge shoes to fill, but don’t worry Rience is just as scary in S3!

Regarding Beau DeMayos’ Allegations Regarding the Writers’ Room

The second item concerns Beau DeMayos’ allegations regarding the writers’ room. DeMayo worked on The Witcher Season 1, Season 2, and Nightmare of the Wolf. In an Instagram Q&A documented by The Direct, he said the following:

I was exposed to know Witcher where some of the writers weren’t [fans] or actively hated the books and games (even actively mocking the source material). This is a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos and makes all the long nights worth it. You must respect the work before you are allowed to add to its legacy.

On her own Instagram, Lauren Hissrich responded to these allegations: I have great respect for Beau and the episodes he wrote! The striga episode is one of my favorites. He wrote the one where people came to Kaer Morhen and Eskel died, which got a lot of backlash, but he was brave in telling the story he wanted to tell. I respect that.

It would seem that, based on those words, killing Eskel in this way was at least partly Beau DeMayos’ idea.

She continued: I never made fun of books. Books are my livelihood. I have a great relationship with Mr. Sapkowski, and writers’ rooms are sacred and safe spaces of support. Don’t believe everything you read.

After that, other The Witcher writers echoed that sentiment on Twitter, praising the writers room and denying DeMayos’ claims as false:

so much is said, allow me to add my article: lauren is one of the best showrunners i know, the writers are some of the most dedicated and supportive ever, season 3 has some of the best Cavill’s (and our) work and what comes next will blow people away! https://t.co/uWyhpBwPba @nikkifaceful As for the former, he collaborated with the writers on set as much as he could and more. As for the latter, it’s a whole mess of lies from an ex-screenwriter of the series.

Coming back to defend my friends, my colleagues and myself. The writers of #Witcher are some of the most lovable, nerdy, dedicated people you’ll ever meet. And we’ve read (and re-read and re-read) the books enough times to know a thing or two about them. (1/3)

The Witcher season 3 is in post-production for a summer 2023 release. The live-action prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin has been set for a Christmas 2022 release. Stay tuned to Redanian Intelligence and head over to our Discord server to participate in The Witcher conversation.
