Illegal billboard set up in Navi Mumbai which blocks signal at a junction | Original picture
Billboards put up to wish people “New Year” have left motorists unconvinced as these billboards block the view of traffic lights. Activist BN Kumar from the Alert Citizens Forum (ACF) raised the problem caused by illegal banners.
He tweeted the photo tagging NMMC. He asked: What are the authorities waiting for? A big accident?
Motorists, who cannot see the signal turn red because their view is blocked by such signs, can injure themselves and others as vehicles can collide, the activist said.
If anyone tries to pull down such billboards, it could lead to clashes as the ads are run by influential politicians, Kumar warned.
Kumars’ Twitter post of a sign blocking the signal at the Kopri to Vashi junction on Palm Beach Road has received more than 1,200 views, demonstrating people’s genuine concern over such signs, the activist said.
He tweeted, Sadly, this is how our politicians want to wish us a Happy New Year by putting up traffic barriers. Wake up, get up and speak Navi Mumbai. And please act @Navimumpolice before someone takes it down. @NMMCCommr. Why do you allow such fences? Is the duty officer unaware of the dangers?
Every senior officer calls for accountability at the usual Vigilance Week events, but the reality is this is lacking, said Parsik Hill-based activist Vishnu Joshi. The confusion caused by such billboards can lead to road rage, he pointed out and wondered: do we need to teach officials such simple things?
Traffic police crews can be seen near signals, just waiting for violations and simply not caring about the dangers of hoarding, Joshi said.
