NBA draft expert Jonathan Givony and ESPN colleague Kevin Pelton criticize Kentucky Wildcats head basketball coach John Calipari and his offensive system.
It’s not the first time and probably not the last either. The latest criticism came from Pelton, admitting he missed his preliminary evaluation of rising NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Pelton rated Gilgeous-Alexander for the project based solely on his UK career (as most project analysts normally would) and it appears he blames the Kentucky system for why the former Wildcat couldn’t showcase his full arsenal during college.
Givony posted a series of tweets earlier in March regarding the Wildcats’ historic loss to St. Peters. He pointed to Kentucky’s little spacing in their half-court offense and the ceiling they gave Kentucky’s guard game (which wasn’t huge in the teams’ short playoffs).
Former assistant coach Jai Lucas left Kentucky for Duke of All Programs, and one has to wonder if it’s not just Lucas who loves head coach Jon Scheyer.
Either way, it would be a step in the right direction for Kentucky to improve their offense this fall.
