United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) soccer player Danielle Gio Reynas said Wednesday that she was the one who reported the 1991 incident between the men’s team head coach of American football Gregg Berhalter and his wife Rosalind.
Reyna says she informed the athletic director of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), Earnie Stewart, of the incident which occurred on December 11, during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In a statement obtained by ESPN and Fox Sports, Reyna said: I told Earnie that I thought it was particularly unfair that Gio, who had apologized for acting immature about his time on game, was still dragged in the mud when Gregg had asked for and received forgiveness for doing something much worse at the same age.
Reyna was referring to her son Gios’ recent argument with Berhalter.
Gio Reyna, one of the USMNT squad’s most accomplished young players with nearly 100 games to his name for Borussia Dortmund at just 20, has played a surprisingly limited role in Qatar with no start and just two substitute appearances .
Berhalter was disappointed with Reynas’ efforts ahead of the tournament and considered sending him home midway through the tournament, according to multiple reports.
On Tuesday, the USMNT announced that it had hired a legal team to investigate Berhalter for an allegation of inappropriate behavior.
Berhalter released a statement via his Twitter account on Tuesday, signed by the head coach and his wife Rosalind. Berhalter described the violent moment in 1991 that Danielle Reyna says she reported to US Soccer.
Berhalter said he kicked his then-girlfriend, now wife. He described it as a shameful moment that he regrets to this day.
The soccer coach, who led the US team in Qatar, said someone contacted US Soccer during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, threatening to bring me down. Berhalter did not name Danielle Reyna in the joint statement.
People can make mistakes and learn from them; people can also be forgiven for their mistakes, Berhalter wrote in the joint statement. Fortunately, Rosalind forgave me.
The intent of this statement is to provide transparency and to emphasize that one bad decision a teenager makes does not necessarily define them for the rest of their life. We will not hide from this. We didn’t then, and we won’t now.
Berhalter said he and his wife have been cooperating with the ongoing investigation into the charges.
We take this opportunity to share what has shaped us and how much we have grown and learned from it over the past 31 years.
US Soccer says it launched a comprehensive review of the men’s program last month.
On Wednesday, Stewart announced that Anthony Hudson will be the interim head coach of the men’s national team while the organization reviews its schedule.
Berhalter’s future with US Soccer remains uncertain. He was appointed to this position in December 2018.
On Wednesday, US Soccer said: In the past, the usual review of the last four years of the entire program after a World Cup would start in the summer, well before any year-end contract expired.
The unique November-December timing of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has significantly reduced the time the Federation would have to carry out a proper assessment before the end of the head coaches’ contract.
