In what is seen as a rebuttal statement to general criticism of coronavirus data, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stressed on Friday that the country “has always worked to collect, analyze and evaluate statistics”. on the pandemic because the details are essential to fight the pandemic. In a Friday briefing, the state-run Global Times reported, the top expert explained how his country has followed established patterns of collecting and analyzing statistics since the first outbreak was reported in the city of Wuhan in 2019.
“After the spread of the virus was brought under control in Wuhan, and until December 2022, sporadic outbreaks in China were mainly caused by cases imported from overseas, and China quickly identified these outbreaks and extinguished them by shortly,” Wu said as the report puts it, noting that the information gathered during that time is “very accurate.”
China is dealing with one of its worst coronavirus outbreaks after millions of people contracted the virus in December. BF.7 was one of the outbreak-related sub-variants as visuals of overcrowded hospitals once again flooded social media, reminding the world of their uphill battle amid the pandemic. But the country has been criticized for not transparently sharing data on the number of actual cases and deaths.
The National Health Commission (NHC) said last month it would not release daily figures days after a report – from the agency – was reportedly leaked which showed that around 18% of the population had contracted the virus in the first three weeks of December.
Meanwhile, China is set to end its international lockdown from 12 p.m. Sunday, opening airports and ports for travel and trade, amid a massive coronavirus outbreak in the country.
It comes as Saturday marked the first day of “chun yun”, the 40-day Lunar New Year travel period known before the pandemic as the world’s largest annual migration of people.
