Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Professor Raj Kumar has tendered his resignation, with the development coming about two months after he was accused of corruption and embezzlement.

Courting controversy

Accused of ignoring seniority for promotions; ‘role’ in multitasking recruitment scam and JE corruption scandal Professor Raj Kumar was appointed PU VC on July 23, 2018 Received a three-year extension in 2021 and his term was due to end on July 23 July 2024

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is the university’s chancellor, accepted Kumar’s resignation on January 13, officials said. He appointed PU Dean of University Instruction (DUI) Renu Vig as VC until further notice. When contacted by phone, Kumar said “the PR (PR) department will talk about the matter.” An official statement released later said that Kumar quit due to “family issues”. Sources at the university, however, said Kumar was asked to resign on January 10 after having a meeting with the vice president at which the UP registrar was also present.

A professor at the Institute of Management Studies, Banaras Hindu University, Kumar was appointed as the 13th PU VC on July 23, 2018, for a three-year term. He was granted a three-year extension in 2021 and his term was due to end on July 23, 2024.

Kumar regularly courted controversy and was recently accused of corruption by UP Senate Member Satya Pal Jain and his team led by former Chandigarh Mayor Davesh Moudgil. He also remained at odds with the Punjab University Teachers’ Association, student political groups, and a few faculty members. He was also accused of having “chosen his favorites in various positions and of using powers for vested interests”.

In recent elections to choose the new PU union, differences emerged between Kumar and Jain, who is India’s additional Solicitor General and former MP for Chandigarh. We learn that the elected officials were divided into “pro-VC” and “anti-VC” groups.

“Professor Raj Kumar’s resignation has been accepted and the Chancellor has appointed Renu Vig as the new VC from 16th January until further notice. Congratulations! I assure him of his full cooperation,” Jain said.
