Mayor Eric Adams City of Yes recently suffered three resounding No’s to new housing, legal legitimacy and sanity. The fault lies not only with woke politicians and judges, but also with our own electorate. If New York continues its frantic race towards destiny, our laughing voters will lead the march.
Public Enemy #1: City Councilwoman Kristin Richardson Jordan, who killed a proposal for more than 900 new rental apartments, half of them affordable, in a mostly vacant central Harlem apartment building. She single-handedly torpedoed plans for a complex called One45 at Lenox Avenue and West 145th Street out of spite. As a result, the land will now serve as a parking lot for trucks.
Public Enemy No. 2: Radical State Senator Mike Gianaris, who spearheaded the decision to dismiss Hector LaSalle, the prominent jurist who was chosen by Governor Kathy Hochuls as Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals. The Senate Judiciary Committee, which Gianaris has packed with cronies, dismissed LaSalle 10-9 on Wednesday. Crime pamper Gianaris represents Astoria, Woodhaven and other districts in Queens who could use anyone but him to defend their interests.
Public Enemy #3: Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur F. Engoron, a state lawyer who outrageously invalidated the city’s landmarks preservation commissions’ approval of a housing plan, stores and green space on an empty lot at 250 Water Street. His reasoning was basically that he just didn’t agree with the LPC’s decision. Judges know best, right?
But the worst culprit is public enemy #4: the voting public. The sad reality is that Jordan, Gianaris and Engoron were all elected with huge margins over negligible competition.

Voters have a choice, but they vote without regard to common sense and their own needs. How did this happen at a time when the city is in desperate need of new housing and state courts are besieged by tireless bombers who are far to the left of even our traditionally liberal policies?
Blame the Democratic parties for the near stranglehold on voter registration in the city and parts of the state. Blame, too, a confused electorate that embraces Marxist-tinged principles of big government control over private enterprise without regard to real-world economic and social consequences.
Weak party leadership squandered what little Republican base remained. Gerrymandering has further tightened the Democrats’ grip on districts predisposed to them. Money from capitalism-hating billionaire George Soros commandeers primaries few attend (which is how we ended up with Alvin Bragg as Manhattan prosecutor, who makes his spineless predecessor Cyrus Vance Jr. look like J. Edgar Hoover in comparison).
In the absence of GOP or even moderate Democratic options, the voting public has come to mean older voters nostalgic for our alliance with Joseph Stalin in World War II; young people weaned on equity, stopping gentrification and saving the planet from sophistry; and defenders of the underclass bent on sucking every penny from the public while giving a nod to crime unless it takes place on Rikers Island.
Result: the rise of tramps like Richardson, Gianaris and Engoron, who do not pretend to hide their seditious impulses.

There is some hope of reversing the reprehensible three blows. Harlem politicians scramble to revive One45 with or without Richardson’s help. LaSalle’s nomination could still be approved by the full Senate. Engoron’s betrayal may well be overturned on appeal, as has happened to many of his farcical decisions in the past.
But in today’s climate of unforgivable awakening, it’s hard to believe that New Yorkers once elected Republicans Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg when crime and decadence finally pushed them out of their comfort zone. .
If the Big Apple is truly doomed this time around, it will be because New Yorkers no longer care enough to stop it. They will shout from Florida how miserable the Big Apple has become, not to mention that they are largely responsible for it.
