Manchester United veteran David de Gea unfazed by critics because ‘people like to talk’

The 32-year-old joined United in 2011 and is closing in on the club’s clean sheet record, but his current contract expires at the end of the season.

Although there have been discussions with the club over extending his stay, United continue to be linked with a summer move for a new goalkeeper – Brentford’s Spanish international David Raya would be the latest on watch list.

De Gea produced another impressive display in the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, pulling off a superb save from Odsonne Edouard late in the first half and showing good feet and was only beaten in stoppage time by a superb free kick from Michael Olise.

Regardless of the talk outside Old Trafford, the veteran Spaniard intends to focus on the things he can control.

“I feel good, I feel really good helping the team,” said De Gea. “I’m training well and I feel confident, like the whole team.

“As soon as I saw the ball coming, I doubted I could make the save (from Edouard), but in the end I touched the ball a bit so it was a great save, especially because we scored afterwards.

“I feel really good and let’s continue.

“I have nothing to show. I have already shown my qualities for many years.

“I know people like to talk, but I’m used to it. I just do the best I can and help the team, I do my best all the time.

“I’ve been through a lot of tough times and I don’t care to be honest (about the noise outside).

“I just focus on my game, my training and my team.” De Gea is relishing Sunday’s trip to Premier League leaders Arsenal in a contest that was once a regular showdown for the ‘blood and thunder’ title.

The Spaniard believes current managers Erik ten Hag and Mikel Arteta could be close to finding a similar sentiment within their current squads.

“We are talking about one of the best managers in history probably with Sir Alex (Ferguson) and (Arsene) Wenger from Arsenal. They are different times, football has changed a bit but we will see,” said De Gea.

“Both managers are really good now, Arsenal and Man United are playing well so it’s going to be a good game.

“Everyone knows how important Sunday’s game is because we are fighting for the top spots, so everyone will be ready for sure and we will start again.”
