Plaintiff seeking monetary compensation, damages and penalties for the company.
Jan. 22, 2023 – Coca-Cola is facing legal action over allegations that its Simply Orange juice contains toxic chemicals known as PFAS, or “forever chemicals.”
The lawsuit alleges the company misled customers by marketing the juice as all-natural, despite third-party testing reportedly finding levels of PFAS in the juice that were hundreds of times higher than federal limits for water. drinkable.
Exposure to high levels of PFAS can increase the risk of various health problems, including cancer, fetal complications, liver disease, kidney or testicular cancer, and increased cholesterol levels.
The lawsuit was filed Dec. 28 by Joseph Lurenz in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against Coca-Cola and the Simply Orange Juice Company.
The plaintiff alleges that the company misrepresented its products by using terms such as “simply natural”, “nothing to hide” and “all natural” on its labels despite the presence of PFAS.
The plaintiff says the defendants knew the product contained dangerous chemicals that could pose a health risk, but failed to disclose the information to consumers.
The plaintiff seeks monetary compensation, damages and penalties for the company.
It is currently unknown how the PFAS chemicals might have contaminated the water used to make the juice, and whether the chemicals might also be in the packaging.
