‘Racist’ abuse at Jersey Bulls game to be investigated

The Jersey Football Association has confirmed that an investigation will take place into allegations of abuse by a visiting footballer at a Jersey Bulls game.

Cobham FC complained to match officials in Springfield on Saturday about what one of the club’s players described as racist abuse in a chant by Bulls supporters.

JFA Chief Executive David Kennedy said: Discrimination and/or abusive behavior has no place in football and all reports will be thoroughly investigated.

Everyone who plays football should be assured of an environment in which their rights, dignity and individual worth are respected and, in particular, of being able to enjoy football without being threatened with intimidation, victimisation, harassment or abuse.

Jersey Bulls fan liaison Adie Viccars described the incident as unfortunate, adding that he did not believe there was an element of racism.

He said: A player who was laughing and joking with supporters earlier in the game took umbrage at a comment that was made, and you have to accept that not all comments will please everyone.

I do not agree that it was something racist, but it [the Cobham player] deemed it good, which is unfortunate.

Mr Viccars said he was disappointed by some of the comments made about the incident, particularly on social media.

People who weren’t even there took to Twitter and made scathing comments about the Bulls, saying the club is racist, he said. The club has worked tirelessly since its inception three and a half years ago to create an inclusive, family-friendly environment that allows people to come and enjoy football safely.
