Actress, writer and activist Jane Fonda, whose protests landed her in jail more than once, blamed the worst of climate change on racism during an interview to promote her new film on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Fonda appeared with her 80 for Bradyco-stars Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field on the talk show this week, where movie stars were asked to reflect on what motivated them to get involved in social issues .
Well, you know, you can take anything, sexism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, whatever, war, Fonda said. And if you really dive into it and study it and learn about it and its history, it all ties together. There would be no climate crisis without racism.
Moreno asked Fonda to explain herself, and she replied, Where would they put the sh? Where would they put the poison and pollution?
They’re not going to put it in Bel Air. They need to find a place where poor, indigenous or people of color live, continued Fonda, herself worth an estimated $200 million after a six-decade career in entertainment. Put that here. They cannot retaliate. And that’s why much of the climate movement is now tied to climate justice.

Globally, for the first time ever, wealthy countries, including the most polluting United States, will pay for the damage caused by climate change to poorer countries. An agreement called loss and damage in conference shorthand was reached at the United Nations’ annual meeting on climate change in 2022, but it took some wrangling to get the United States to sign off.
These small economies are often the source of fossil fuels CL00, -0.38%, PICK minerals, -1.55%, and other raw materials behind modern conveniences and technological advancements in the developed worlds, including many practical responsible for global warming emissions. And yet the developing world bears the worst of droughts, deadly heat, destroyed crops and eroded coastlines that kill lives and eat away at economic growth.
Fondas’ climate activism was already in the headlines in October 2019 when she was among 16 people arrested on the steps of the US Capitol during a rally. The actress was charged with crowding, obstructing or encumbering.
Fonda, who is 85, said she was inspired by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who turned 20 earlier this month and began her activism with a solo sit-in outside the Swedish parliament in 2018, when she was 15.
