Whether you want to call it a rivalry or not, it’s clear that UNC and NC State don’t like each other very much. And now it’s spilling more and more into the recruiting aspect of college athletics.
On Wednesday, NC State landed a commitment from safety Brody Barnhardt as it picked the Wolfpack over UNC, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others. The Charlotte native decided to stay in the state and commit to the Wolfpack, but during the process he tried out for UNC.
Barhardt called the school “wine and cheese” people, saying they are not rowdy like other programs.
I really like all the coaches at UNC, but in school they’re more of a wine and cheese type of people and I like rowdy people like NC State or Virginia Tech or Wisconsin, Barnhardt said via Rivals. If you go to an NC State game, it’s going to be a lot louder and crazier than a UNC game if both are at home.
Ouch.
Barnhardt has been engaged for a few hours and is already adding some fuel to the on-the-soccer rivalry between the two teams. He’s not the only one to have done it either.
Linebacker Peyton Wilson moved from UNC to NC State and was not a fan of the Larry Fedora helicopter he used on recruiting trips. Over the years, Wilson has become an enemy to UNC fans and it looks like Barnhardt does as well despite still being over a year away from playing in a game between the two teams.
I have a feeling a few UNC players will remember those comments downright.
