Dante Vanzeir, the New York Red Bulls player accused of using a racist remark during the clubs game against the San Jose Earthquakes this weekend, will leave the team indefinitely.

Dante Vanzeir addressed his teammates this morning and, to avoid further distractions, will be away from the club until further notice, the Red Bulls announced via Twitter on Tuesday.

A representative for San Jose Earthquakes declined to comment on Tuesday. A representative for Major League Soccer (MLS) did not immediately respond to the Rolling Stones’ request for comment.

The update comes days after Vanzeir was accused of using racist language on the pitch. Quakes player Jeremy Ebobisse, who is black, said over the weekend he heard a player use offensive language and informed the game referee of the incident.

The referees stopped play for 20 minutes, before restarting the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw. MLS said in a statement after the game on Saturday that it would investigate the incident saying the league has zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language.

What we saw tonight shouldn’t be part of the game, Ebobisse told reporters after the game (via MLSSoccer.coms Tom Bogert). The player added that the racial remark was not directed at him, but I know what I heard.

On Monday, the Red Bulls released a statement on behalf of Vanzeir, in which the Belgian player apologized and said he would accept any suspensions, fines and advice issued by Major League Soccer and the club. (The RBNY club and coaching staff also apologized for not removing the player from the field after the incident and for their inexcusable inaction during the game.)

Earthquakes coach Luchi Gonzalez said after the game that he gave his team the option to leave the game altogether, but the players opted to continue the game, resulting in an MLS record of 22 minutes of downtime. Editor’s Choice

I was adamant in suggesting the player should not be on the pitch anymore, Gonzalez told reporters after the game. When I listen to my players in terms of what was said or not said, there are things there that are unacceptable. It takes precedence over the game we play.

Ebobisse said: “What is important for me to share is that I know what I heard and the reason why I thought after a long conversation that we should continue the game. is because the player who said the word claimed he wasn’t targeting any of us.

Although Ebobisse did not name Vanzeir specifically after the game, it was apparent from the action on the pitch that the player sparked the incident: during the break in action, Gonzalez reportedly asked the Red Bulls manager , Gerhard Struber, to remove Vanzeir from the game. However, Vanzeir remained in the game when play resumed and was only substituted in the 87th minute. Tendency

Ebobisse later added, that’s what it’s like to be Black in those situations. You can’t go wrong, you can’t go past anything outside of what you know to be fact. You must proceed with absolute caution, even in times of injury when you feel rather helpless.

After the match, the California team said they would fully support MLS’s investigation. Our club does not tolerate any form of racism or abuse and we support our players following these very serious allegations, the club wrote. This language has no place in our game.
