Talking Point radio show host Damion Grange said medical professionals at Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital (DOSH) should not be blamed for the problems plaguing the system locally.
In a recent episode of the Talking Points radio show, the social commentator said most of the problems at the hospital and at the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) were the result of government decisions, although workers at the health are often blamed.
“DOSH and, by extension, BVIHSA and its facilities are doing a very good job for which they are not recognized. People keep blaming the organization, but they’re at a bottleneck and the problem isn’t inside the organization — it’s outside,” said Grange who is also a BVIHSA employee. “It is an administrative problem and it must be solved at the government level.”
Grange also postulated that health care is about to deteriorate if the government does not take serious solving of the problems on its side. “Until the government takes health care redress seriously and stops blaming BVIHSA, the people of this territory will continue to suffer from substandard care. Not only that, if not treated with great urgency, the possibility of it deteriorating even further looms,” Grange said.
The BVIHSA has faced many challenges and criticisms within the local community, as residents often complain about the low staff-to-patient ratio as well as insufficient access to healthcare in some communities. The government has indicated that steps have been taken to address staffing shortages, including recruiting Cuban medical professionals and offering higher salaries to attract medical professionals from various countries.
