Actor Ismael Cruz Crdova has revealed that a therapist was hired on the set of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for his benefit.
Crdova spoke at length about the rental during a podcast interview with Variety.
MEMORIAL DAY BARBECUE PRICE UP FROM LAST YEAR
The therapist is expected to help the actor deal with a wave of racist backlash since being cast in the Amazon Prime series. Sometimes Crdova doesn’t need to talk to this therapist to feel her benefit because his mere presence reminds her “there was someone out there who saw [him] completely.”
You need support when this happens because the voices are so loud and they come from so many places, Crdova said.
Due to Crdova being the first person of color to play an elf, along with Arondir, he received death threats and spam emails as well as attempts to hack into his phone, PayPal and bank accounts. Subsequently, Crdova suffered “a psychological and mental health impact”.
I grew up with this rejection all around me. And that’s something that motivated me, shared Crdova. I wasn’t going to take no for an answer because I knew what this role would entail. I knew what it would do as part of the fantasy. I knew I wanted to be part of something historic, especially with the elves. Elves have historically been portrayed as white and Aryan. I wanted to be an elf. I was a mountaineer [who grew up in Puerto Rico]. I was in love with nature and I knew it would change things.

LOTR star Elijah Wood lent his support to Crdova last year when he tweeted a picture of himself wearing a shirt with elf ears of all skin tones. It was captioned “You are all welcome here”.
