NKY family blames Altafiber for sewer problem that caused damage to their home

COLD SPRING, Ky. Sewage on the floor goes through walls and carpet.

That’s what a family in Cold Spring had to deal with, and they say Altafiber is to blame.

Rhonda and Joe Tignor say Altafiber contractors cut down the center of their sewer line when installing fiber optic cables in January.

The Cold Spring, Ky. family tells me they had to rip everything out of the lower level of their home. They are almost done rebuilding, but it will cost them about $5,000 out of pocket.

“We certainly hope they reimburse us for the inconvenience and the money we had to spend,” said Joe Tigner.

The Tignor’s basement flooded with sewage.

“I could see the carpet was wet and there was feces on the floor,” he said.

They had to rip everything out of two bedrooms, the family room and a bathroom.

Almost 4 months later, they have almost completed the repairs, but Altafiber has not paid anything.

“It just seems like they shouldn’t be able to do this and get away with it, they should be held accountable,” Rhonda Tigner said.

Altafiber provided the following statement:

“Altafiber is committed to providing every address and neighborhood in Greater Cincinnati with fiber-enabled gigabit Internet access. We are currently in the process of completing our fiber construction in Greater Cincinnati, which includes burying fiber in many neighborhoods. We plan to transition another 100,000 addresses with fiber in 2023. We have actively engaged in the process to resolve this situation with the owner and his insurer. We apologize for the disruption to this resident and understand the importance of minimizing disruption to the public as we complete the When problems arise, we are committed to doing things right.

Since last August, the WCPO has been reporting on people’s problems following the installation of fiber optic cables by Altafiber.

Since then, residents of Liberty Township, Deerfield Township, Hebron, Florence and West Chester have all reached out to say they had a similar experience with Altafiber.

The Tignors say Altafiber told them they wouldn’t be able to assess a claim until all repairs were completed.

“They need to do something so that if this happens to someone again, they are held accountable to fix it immediately,” Rhonda Tignor said. “We shouldn’t have taken $5,000 out of our pocket when they were the ones who caused this mess.”
