Brazilian government demands action from Argentina after racism in Libertadores game

[ad_1]

Brazil’s Minister of Justice reacted to racial abuse suffered by Fluminense fans during Conmebol Libertadores game against River Plate

Unfortunately, racism continues to be a topic in world football. Not so long ago, the abuse Vinicius Junior suffered in Spain was in the news. Far from learning from these shameful events, some fans in South America continue to make racist gestures and chants.

Brazilian teams and fans are the main victims, and the Fluminense match against River Plate in Buenos Aires for the 5th day of the group stage of the Conmebol Libertadores 2023 is proof of this. Following the racist situations that have arisen in Argentina, the Brazilian Minister of Justice, Flvio Dino, declared that he would ask the Argentine authorities to act.

Brazil asks Argentina to act after racist episodes

Another unacceptable episode. I will formally request action from the competent justice and security authorities in Argentina,” Dino wrote on Twitter, quoting a tweet showing racist gestures by some River Plate fans.

These embarrassing events overshadow what should be an enjoyable competition, as there are many great things about South American football. Unfortunately, racism remains a problem to be solved. In Rio de Janeiro, a law has been approved to stop games when racism is detected.

Conmebol has also taken significant steps to discourage such episodes, fining teams whenever racist episodes occur. Even so, fans continue to attack. Hopefully we will come to the day when racism is no longer a thing in sport.
