Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has taken aim at some of the criticism leveled at him last season.
Van Dijk, who had been touted as the best defender in the world by many pundits and fans, hasn’t had the best 12 months.
Various injury issues and a lackluster World Cup have seen his stock decline, which is something Van Dijk resents.
“Sometimes the criticism was right, both on the team and on me individually,” he told Algemeen Dagblad.
“Quite often but not entirely. But either way you have to be able to get through it, and I’m glad I did well. Mentally it’s not always easy.
“Criticism is only part of it and it is certainly not a problem if it is justified. But there lies a small difference. A footballer knows very well when he has played well or badly, so also if (the ) criticism is justified.
“But there are also times when comments are mostly meant to be effective. Let things be said for the sake of saying them. There are so many platforms for people to express themselves on these days.”
