Winnebago County Treasurer attributes tax bill delays to Postal Service

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Winnebago County tax bills had to be stamped on Friday, but some homeowners are concerned their checks are failing.

These owners blame the United States Postal Service. The county treasurer says her office has had issues with the post office.

We discussed the issues with her. Winnebago County Treasurer Sue Goral says the problem is only getting worse and tells us that some tax forms that were mailed months ago have never arrived.

“It now takes weeks to get somewhere,” said Goral.

Goral says the USPS continues to stamp the mail with the word “Vacant,” either letting it sit at the post office or returning it to them.

“This year, for some reason, there are a huge number of people calling and saying they never got it, yet it was all sorted out properly,” Goral said.

His office sends out tax bills to every resident of the county twice a year. She says they are being addressed to the right place, but still not delivered.

“I expect invoices to go to the premises of the address to which they were addressed. I don’t expect them to be at the post office – stamped and sent back to me, ”Goral explained.

Goral says the same is happening on his end. She does not receive taxpayer checks, sometimes until weeks later.

“People send their bills in the mail and it takes forever to get here. Like the one I told you about, it was mid-May and it just got processed today. It should only take a few days, ”Goral added.

Her complaints, she says, are still unresolved and the USPS has not said if that will be resolved.

“My postman who comes here apologizes but [says] to call the main office. It’s ‘that’s how it is,’ ”said Goral.

We have contacted the post for comment, but have not received a response.
