Manchester United midfielder Fred was the victim of racist abuse on Instagram after Thursday’s 4-2 Premier League loss at home to Liverpool and the social media company removed several of the posts from his profile and took action against individuals.
The 28-year-old Brazilian had a disappointing game against Liverpool and received a number of post-game abusive messages in the comments section of a photo he posted on Sunday following United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa.
“Racist abuse of Fred’s post is unacceptable and we don’t want it on Instagram,” a spokesperson for the Facebook company said in a statement.
“We have removed a number of comments and taken action against the accounts that posted them. We urge people to use our security features, including comment filters and message controls, which can dramatically reduce the abuse people experience.
“Nothing will solve this challenge overnight, but we are committed to doing what we can to protect our community from abuse. “
Scores of players from several Premier League clubs have been targeted online in recent months.
United previously said they conducted a review to analyze the level of abuse players face on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and found that since September 2019 there has been a 350% increase in abuse against their players.
Britain said on Wednesday that a planned new law would see social media companies fined up to 10% of revenue or £ 18million if they fail to eliminate online abuse, while senior executives could also be subject to criminal prosecution. English football boycotted social media earlier this month to protest online abuse by players.
