The soft-spoken Japanese national football coach of Singapore blamed himself for the 5-0 loss to Uzbekistan in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on June 8, 2021.
Japanese coach Tatsuma Yoshida, 46, previously apologized to fans for Singapore’s 4-0 loss to Palestine on June 4.
Singapore is ranked 159th in the FIFA World Ranking. Uzbekistan is 86th.
Take the fall for the team
After conceding nine goals in two outings, Yoshida refrained from apologizing this time around, but covered his boys by taking the blame, the Japanese way.
Speaking in hesitant English, Yoshida called the latest loss a big loss for the boys and said he and his team were “not enough” at this point.
However, he said he hoped the team would do better against Saudi Arabia and make it a “good game”.
Yoshida said in her post-match interview:
It was a great loss for the boys. The boys were doing fine. Their performance was better than the previous match. So it shows that they can do more. They have proven that they can do more. It is also necessary to understand that we are not enough and it is also my management and my strategy. And my everything as a coach is not enough. But we and I will have to learn from this game. But we don’t waste time bemoaning this match. We will continue. We have the next game against Saudi Arabia. The boys need treatment. The last game, I want to make it a good game. The last game of this tour.
