My daughter was not there and a young man came here playing with a gun and shot my grandson in the hand, said Darrell Wright, Cherry Wright’s father.
Police charged Cherry Wright, the teenager’s mother, with a bullet in her hand, false reporting and bribing a witness. This happened at the Manoir du Jardin de l’Université around 2:30 p.m. on May 15.
The police affidavit states that officers responded to the apartment and found the teenager with a gunshot wound to his hand. Officers discovered that someone had left the apartment after the shooting in order to hide or destroy evidence.
A few days later, police questioned the 14-year-old who said they found the gun behind the apartments and that it was his.
Next, police overheard a conversation on a prison phone where Cherry Wright, speaking with her son, said another juvenile would take up the rap, saying: [he] gonna take this load and i’ll give it $ 250 for it.
The 14-year-old told police, saying he was never paid.
My daughter did not offer any children money or anything, said Darrell Wright.
Lawyer Michael Working says all inmate conversations are recorded.
These are often used against people in their trials, Working said.
Work adds that people think that many crimes committed in their childhood do not have serious consequences.
Anytime you get into trouble as a minor it can be used to strengthen your bond when you become an adult and it can be used to lengthen your punishment. You get a longer sentence when you’re an adult, he said.
Cherry Wright’s relatives have said she has now been released from prison.
