GUWAHATI: Controversy erupted over the death of a 23-year-old in Assams Nagaon district on Wednesday with locals alleging he died after being beaten by police while playing cricket for hours of curfews and law enforcement claiming he was involved in a racket game and jumped into a pond after spotting a police patrol. The incident took place in Gereki under the jurisdiction of the Rupahihat police station in the district. The youngster was identified as Soaib Akhter. Carrying his body, an angry crowd surrounded the police station and staged a protest. They also threw stones in which several police vehicles were partially damaged. The police used batons and fired in the air to disperse the crowd. SP (Nagaon) Anand Mishra, who arrived at the scene to monitor the situation, told media that preliminary investigation shows illegal betting was taking place in Gereki in the name of playing cricket. The youngster, who tried to flee the place with others, fell into a body of water and died. However, a proper investigation has already been launched, he said. Meanwhile, Pintu Pathak, OC of the Rupahihat Police Station, told TOI: We have received reports that illegal betting is taking place in the name of the game of cricket. We went there. When the young people saw the police team approaching the field, they started to flee. We saw about thirty motorcycles there. They gathered there in violation of the curfew. We later learned that a youth had fallen into a body of water and died. Later, a crowd surrounded the police station and threw stones. Two police vehicles were damaged and few of our staff were injured, he added.
