Dr Anthony Fauci has epitomized science. With his record as a famous bureaucrat, then, it’s no wonder that some people are critical of his performance. No wonder, unless you’re Fauci himself.
Fauci is absolutely amazed that anyone who dares to criticize him. I have been the object of a phenomenal amount of hostility myself just for promoting really basic and simple public health principles, he told Chelsea Clinton on a podcast. Meanwhile, on MSNBC, he introduced himself as the only true spokesperson for science. If you try to attack me as a public health official and scientist, you are really attacking, not just Dr Anthony Fauci, you are attacking science.
Who would have imagined that the longtime camera-chasing bureaucrat who portrayed himself as an avatar of science while constantly misleading or even lying to the public would be subject to criticism?
And Fauci misled and lied. Many times. In an email correspondence in February 2020, he did not recommend masks to protect people from infection with the virus and publicly told people not to wear them. Whether or not this is an example of scientific change or not does not matter, as Fauci then decided to describe it not as if he was wrong but as nobly lying to preserve the masks of the workers of First line.
And this is not the only example. Fauci admitted to lying about the percentage of the population that would need to be vaccinated to achieve collective immunity because, in his opinion, the country was not ready to hear what he really thought. Fauci continued to wear a mask after being fully immunized and told Kentucky Senator Rand Paul it wasn’t theater, only to later admit he didn’t want to send mixed signals.
Despite his claim to the contrary, Fauci downplayed the idea that the virus emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology and even now he is only arguing that he opposed the Strawman’s argument according to which the virus would be a deliberately released biological weapon.
Fauci also continued to push for blockades and hide warrants long after evidence showed they were unnecessary. He was confused that cases would continue to drop in Texas after he lifted his mask mandate and desperately warned the state not to declare victory a month later. Meanwhile, he praised the appalling response to the New York pandemic and Governor Andrew Cuomo. If Fauci has made himself the personification of science, it is no wonder that science deniers abound.
Fauci is the victim of nothing but his own arrogance. He made himself the final authority on all things related to the pandemic and continued to lie to get the results he wanted. He posed for magazine shoots and went to baseball games when not everyone was allowed to attend. It was a disaster and it clearly deserves most of the criticism that has been leveled at it.
