Team 18 driver Scott Pye took full responsibility for the first corner incident of today’s Supercars Championship race at Hidden Valley in Darwin.
From fourth on the grid, Pye got off to a good start and quickly passed his teammate Winterbottom, whose engine briefly died on the way to Turn 1.
Poleman Anton de Pasquale defended his first position against Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Shane van Gisbergen, but not enough.
The championship leader saw a car width gap and started the movement inward and managed to stop it for the turn.
The New Zealander ran a bit too far, de Pasquale saw him and attempted to cut back inside but was hit by Pye who took the blame.
I fucked up, Pye said after the race. I misjudged it, then cut that apex edging, once I did that it was game over.
I think Anton might have tried to get back to Shane, he thought Shane would have continued.
Once he checked a bit more I was engaged, couldn’t do more than I was already trying. I went downstairs and said sorry to Anton.
For the incident, Pye was given a passing penalty, but the damage had already been done, Pye was one lap behind after the team was forced to repair the damage up front for the collision of turn 1.
The contact spun de Pasquale past the pitch before he was picked up by his Pyes teammate Mark Winterbottom, Jack Smith, Fabian Coulthard and most importantly Todd Hazelwood, eliminating all discord and leaving many teams with many hours of work. overnight repair.
It’s almost like rubbing salt into the wound for me at this point, Pye said of the drive-thru. I think obviously there are a lot of things that caused it, but the day I destroyed it, so it’s my fault and I’m going to take it.
Pye was disappointed with his mistake and the hard work it put on the team, nevertheless he is happy with the pace of the car and the life of the tires, therefore he is optimistic about a good result on the tires. super tender tomorrow.
I feel bad for the crew, he confessed.
Unfortunately I had to wait 38 laps to come out, hug everyone and say sorry, I spent all the time apologizing on the radio because you know cars a jet. I just wasted it today, so buddy gutted it.
But the car is very fast, I think we did 29 laps before I was in the pits and on my lap we were on a 1.07.7, so I think the pace in the car is amazing, I just need to be in the race, not a lap lower.
All in all these days are (about) learning, I fucked up, got to watch it tonight and hope I can get my finger off the driver’s way tomorrow, do it again only better.
