Mark Anderson certainly has a right to wonder if the gods of golf have something against him.
The 35-year-old who completed four separate stints on the PGA Tour, Anderson joined Saturday’s standings contenders from the Rocket Mortgage Classic, registering six birdies on his nine back to shoot five under par 67 at Detroit Golf Club to arrive at nine cents after three rounds. (The map could have been considerably better, but Anderson double-buged the 18th hole by hitting a bunker on the green into a hazard.)
Anderson, currently ranked 706th in the world, may blame some of his career issues on a ladder and ankle injuries that plagued his performances over the course of a few seasons.
In May 2014, Anderson was 15 feet tall on a ladder, changing a light bulb at his home in Beaufort, South Carolina, when he fell and suffered a torn ligament in his right ankle. On the PGA Tour for the second time after winning the Web.com Tour in 2013, Anderson lost the rest of the year, unable to fully play golf until September.
I don’t own a grand scale now, Anderson told The State newspaper.
Anderson played on a medical exemption in 2015 but was unable to keep his card. He returned to the PGA Tour in 2016-17, but was unable to retain his status. And in 2019, he rolled his ankle and broke another bone, but that didn’t beat his season. Hed previously won the Korn Ferry event in Colombia in February, preparing to win his PGA Tour card again for the 2019-2020 campaign.
At 199th in the FedEx Cup standings, Anderson is once again battling to keep his card and a solid finish could go a long way to sticking around. So far, the season has been tough so far. His best result is a T-26 in Bermuda in November, and at one point Anderson missed six straight cuts.
