Jamie Carragher defends early Euro 2020 criticism of England’s Harry Kane, says Gareth Southgate “thought the same”

JAMIE CARRAGHER has defended comments he made about Harry Kane after the England star scored twice against Ukraine on Saturday.

The Sky Sports expert previously wrote that Kane looked exhausted in Euro 2020’s opener against Croatia, saying the striker was barely involved in the win in his Telegraph column.

Kane is back in shape with three goals in two knockout games

Former Tottenham and England player Graham Roberts has taken note of the criticisms, with Carragher suggesting Kane is not the same player he was in 2018.

Kane has since responded with three goals in two knockout games and is returning to his best in front of goal.

As a result, Roberts questioned Carragher for doubting England’s number nine.

In response, Carragher replied on Twitter: “He hadn’t looked normal until that goal against Germany.

“I never mentioned his lack of goals once, but his overall play and movement, he was knocked out twice, so Gareth thought the same.

“I also said that without Kane near his best we can’t win. The analysis is perfect as usual!”

In Carragher’s defense, he told Sky that Kane would be up to the task if he got the good service from his teammates, and the game against Ukraine proved it.

Carragher said: “He (Kane) has to do more himself. That’s my problem with that. The responsibility always lies with the other players. Kane has to do more himself.

“If Kane has a chance, he will score. But he didn’t create enough for himself.

“Can England get more from him?” Yes. But what more can Kane do because it’s not a one-time game anymore, it’s a bit of a role model. ‘

And against Germany and Ukraine, Kane did more by placing himself in good scoring positions, finding himself in plenty of room to pounce on Raheem Sterling’s pass within five minutes in Rome.

Kane will now be aiming for the Golden Shoe as he’s only two goals away from Cristiano Ronaldo’s five-goal total, just like Sterling.

The Manchester City star has always believed his teammate would be up to the task when needed, and now the pair will aim to score the goals to beat Denmark in the Wembley semi-finals next week.
