Sunday gaming panel pushes back criticism of Roscommon’s Dire Galway tactics

[ad_1]

Galway booked their spot for the SFC Connacht final after a rather routine 2-11-0-12 win over Roscommon at Dr Hyde Park this afternoon.

It was a decent performance from Galway, who dominated the proceedings in difficult weather conditions. They were the best team throughout the game, although they only put real distance between the teams at the end of the game.

In truth, Roscommon never really seemed to win it. Much of this was down to their tactics, with manager Anthony Cunningham opting to take a ber-defensive approach in order to counter the opposition’s scoring threat.

This made the game difficult at times, especially as the home side struggled to switch from defense to attack.

It was also the type of game plan we perhaps should have expected from the Rossies considering Stephen Poacher joined their setup earlier this year.

Many viewers have certainly been disappointed with their approach, especially when they came up against a county that they have often matched in recent seasons.

Not difficult to see poachers affecting Roscommon …

Roscommon’s decision making in the second half was dismal. Terrible stuff for a division 1/2 team, you wonder what kind of training they are.

Roscommon set up to prevent Galway from winning rather than winning themselves: This is a constant failure of many cross-county managers who only care about the opposition with no concept of making the opposition worried about their team

In a knockout championship, it’s a shocking way for Roscommon to get knocked out. Had no interest in trying to win the game. #GAA #ROSvGAL

Shambles of Roscommon, this setup is vomited, Anthony Cunningham is better than that.

When your mindset is to limit damage, you invariably end up being damaged. .

Returns to incompetence on another level.

Not today or yesterday in the direction of a # abyss ..

Roscommon has quality footballers – I don’t know why they don’t play a more attacking style against Galway #GAA #ROSvGAL

It’s depressing to watch; 15 men behind the ball, stirring the ball endlessly in their fifties. No rule change can correct Roscommon manager’s lack of imagination #sundaygame

If Roscommon were deeper they would be in Munster

As a man who’s been through a lot of Ulster football, Roscommon’s attitude in this game makes me lose the will to live. #gaa

However, the Sunday Game panel rebuffed the idea that Roscommon shot himself in the foot playing so defensively.

Speaking after the game, Kevin McStay said Roscommon clearly felt that playing this way gave them the best chance of winning the game.

It’s all about balance, defensive setup and transition, do you have the players to do it. You cut your fabric to your measure.

I will not point the finger at their decision. It’s the best effort they could make to give Roscommon the best chance of victory …

It’s a Galway team that will think they are at the level of all of Ireland. For Roscommon, to make it tight in the conditions, they got into a strong defensive mold.

The trick is to get out of it, that’s the difficulty. You can’t just click a finger and say ‘in the second half we’re going offensive’, that’s the way you approach the game.

It’s frustration.

Eamon Fitzmaurice had a similar point of view.

He disagreed with Joanne Cantwell’s suggestion that Roscommon is a team at the same level as Galway, saying players on the squad would likely have expressed concerns if they weren’t happy with the plan. match.

I imagine in any setup at this level the players also have a huge voice, if they didn’t, they should have.

If the players are disappointed with the way they are organized and it lacks ambition, it’s up to them to articulate, to show a little leadership, and to make sure when they do. Will launch there next season to have a slightly more expansive approach. which suits the attackers they have.

At the same time when you are trying to close the gap to the next level (you may have to).

Galway will now face Mayo or Leitrim in a Connacht final, while Roscommon’s summer was cut short due to the lack of a backdoor in this year’s championship.
