Special counsel Park Young-soo, who has investigated a corruption scandal involving former President Park Geun-hye, resigned on Wednesday amid allegations he accepted a Porsche car from a man in the city. fishing business.
Park said in a statement to reporters that he submitted his resignation letter, believing it was becoming “difficult” for him to perform his duties as special adviser.
“I feel a strong moral responsibility for such things as presenting a controversial figure to Senior Prosecutor Lee without knowing his exact identity,” the special advocate said, referring to a prosecutor suspected of accepting expensive gifts of the businessman, nicknamed Kim.
“On reports that are different from the truth, I will provide an explanation at a later date,” he said.
Park added, “However, I have decided to retire on the basis that I would be unfavorable to the people by continuing to serve as special adviser under the current circumstances.”
The businessman, who is on trial for defrauding several public figures, allegedly gave a Porsche car and expensive seafood as a gift to the special lawyer.
Park claimed he only rented the car for two days and paid for it in full. But some noted that he made the payment after police launched a full-scale investigation into Kim.
“Despite many difficulties, I have put all my heart and soul into determining the truth behind the (corruption scandal involving the former president) over the past four years and seven months,” Park said. “I cannot fully express my regret and I am sorry I retired halfway through this incident.”
With Park’s resignation, President Moon Jae-in is required by law to appoint a replacement without delay. (Yonhap)
