LETTER: USPS Criticism Wrong | Letters

The criticism of the postal service is unwarranted

The post is lacking to the public [Letters, July 7] attacked the United States Postal Service, claiming when [a] the package was shipped by post, I usually expect not to receive it at all, let alone when promised.

As an online bookseller shipping exclusively through the USPS, I disagree with this. I should also point out that the Mail Innovations shipping method mentioned by the author is actually a hybrid delivery system that relies primarily on UPS until the last stage of shipping, when the postal service is used.

The author of the letter also makes the general statement that the post office has serious morale problems, another statement with which I disagree. I use the Spotsylvania, Spotsylvania Mall, Locust Grove, and Culpeper post offices on a regular basis, and the vast majority of postal workers I have encountered have been both pleasant and professional, as have the local delivery people.

As for the writers’ complaint about late or missing packages, I can show stacks of recent receipts that track deliveries completed before their scheduled arrival dates.

For example, I shipped two books on July 3 from the downtown Culpeper post office that arrived at their destination on July 6, both in Utah. It was the next business day. I know roughly how much UPS and FedEx would charge for such fast delivery many times what the USPS does.
