ARLINGTON, Virginia – A man in Northern Virginia is in his neighbors’ doghouse for placing spiked rugs on expensive bushes in his yard to prevent dogs from using the shrubs as a toilet.

Someone called me a sociopath, Eric Wang, from Arlington, told WTOP. Someone else called me a Disney villain.
On social media app Nextdoor, Wang’s neighbors said they fear the rugs could pose a danger to pets and children, WRC-TV reported.
Last fall, Wang said he tried dog repellant sprays, but the dogs continued to use his garden and the shrubs died.
I had the landscaping done last summer and then in the fall I noticed the shrubs around the corner of my property started to decline, Wang told WTTG. I have tried other measures. I tried a product called Critter Ridder which is a non-toxic odorous animal repellant that didn’t work at all. I tried putting up signs asking owners not to let their dogs urinate on the shrubs. It was not very efficient.
This year, Wang replaced the Japanese yews he originally bought for $ 300 each, OMCP reported.
I went online and did some research to see what products might be effective that might also be visually non-intrusive, Wang told the radio station.
It was then that Wang discovered a product called anti-scat mat.
It’s those plastic mats that you put on the floor, and they have these pungent pieces that are designed to make walking uncomfortable for dogs, cats and other animals, Wang told WTOP.
Wang said that the rugs cannot harm any animal.
You can push with moderate force, Wang told the WRC. You see minor indentations on my palm, but it doesn’t cause any punctures.
Not everyone agrees.
Karina Jimenez is a nanny who accompanies children in the district of Wangs.
Kids are walking or scootering and playing with bikes or running, and I think it’s not safe for kids, Jimenez said at the WRC.
Wang disagreed.
Dozens and dozens of dog owners and their dogs passed by each day, walking a few inches from the protective mats, Wang told the WTO. I didn’t notice any problems.
At least two people posted on Nextdoor that they called the police and were told nothing could be done, Arlington Now reported. A spokeswoman for the Arlington County Police Department said she could not find any traces of calls regarding the spikes.
Arlington County code enforcement officials made two visits and said the mat was acceptable, WRC reported.
When I first saw the little post on Nextdoor, I was worried because we spend all the time near these bushes, Steve Sockwall, who walks dogs in the area, told TV station. But when I walked past, I noticed it was just a thread. It didn’t seem to harm the dog.
The reviews on Nextdoor were negative. According to WTTG, one commentator wrote: It is not alienating, it is sociopathic behavior. Another person posted, Maybe he’s just mad because he bought a lousy house.
Wang said the complaints on social media were exaggerated.
People need to assess the credibility of claims they see online before reacting to them, Wang told the WRC.
