Lakewood Hosts First Annual Tree Sale

Posted on February 13, 2023

February 13, 2023 – The Town of Lakewood will hold its first annual tree sale from March 1 to March 31 or depending on stock availability. The Lakewood Tree Sale is intended to encourage Lakewood residents to support increased tree cover in the town.

Deeply discounted trees will be offered at $25 per tree, up to 1 inch thick, with a limit of four trees per household. Ten different tree species will be available, including maple, catalpa, hackberry, redbud, coffee, oak, chypre, and linden. Tree pick-up will take place Saturday, April 15 from 7 a.m. to noon at City Greenhouse, 9556 W. Yale Ave. Learn more about tree species, planting and care instructions, at Lakewood.org/TreeSale.

“The tree sale is a great opportunity to provide our residents with trees at discounted prices, reduce the financial barrier to purchasing trees, and support the city’s sustainability goals,” said the forestry supervisor Luke Killoran.

The city has a better idea of where more trees need to be planted after completing a canopy assessment of public and private trees in the city in 2022. This assessment also provided a way to assess areas of viable plantations and locations most in need of additional tree cover. Residents can access real-time city tree data and view tree canopies by city neighborhood, zip code and more, using the TreePlotter™ tree canopy map to see the canopy in their neighborhoods. Learn more about the city’s tree canopy with the Tree Canopy Fact Sheet at Lakewood.org/TreeCanopyMap.

The city one Sustainability plan includes a goal of achieving 30% tree canopy coverage by 2025. Tree canopy assessment shows the city’s canopy coverage at 16% and a possible planting area of 41% . As part of the effort to increase tree cover, the city has set aside funds to support an annual tree sale for residents and to increase plantings on city properties.
