MUMBAI: A total of 168 job applicants from different parts of India were kicked out of the Maldives in Mumbai on Friday after immigration officials in the Maldives discovered discrepancies in their travel itinerary.
Upon arrival, all the leaflets lodged a complaint with the Sahar Police Station against the travel agents and the Delhi and Kolkata-based Manpower consultancy firm for allegedly duping them with false promises of jobs in the countries. Gulf after charging a fee of between Rs1 lakh and Rs1.5 lakh each (approximately a total of Rs2.5 crore) for all expenses.
Of the 168 victims, 40 each come from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and different parts of the country.
Based on the complaint, police arrested the two officers who will appear in court on Saturday after being convicted under articles of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of cheating and forgery.
The victims come from different strata of life and are from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata etc. They flew from Mumbai before being deported. Some of them paid money for engineering work while others belong to the category of workers. The consulting firm hired officers to arrange flight tickets for job applicants and their hotel stay, a police officer from Sahar Police Station said.
The flyers learned they had been duped when immigration officials asked them if they could reach the Maldives. Arrested travel agents who also traveled with the victims informed that the plan was to quarantine the 168 midshipmen at the hotel in the Maldives for 14 days before arrangements were made to have them reach Saudi Arabia. However, immigration officials found there were no proper documents to stay at the Maldives hotel, the officer said.
The officer said the rerouting was planned because a direct flight to Gulf countries from India is not allowed until July 21. Victims also complained that they had received bogus return tickets from officers the police are checking.
