Fast fashion brands have accelerated the fashion industry’s carbon footprint and some of the industry’s biggest names are stepping up to help make positive change.
Adidas, Levi’s, Zara Stop Fast Fashion Waste

Awareness and scrutiny continues to increase for the fashion industry because of its increasing carbon footprint. Statistics reveal that almost 97% of all purchased clothing ends up in overflowing landfills and generates non-recyclable waste due to the textiles mixed in the clothing. Stand outfast fashion brandis being targeted as a top pyramid leader who needs to make a difference and set an example.
With a fast turnaround of consumers who love to “stay in style” and the constant urge to follow trends and ignore past styles, consumers are throwing their clothes away for nothing. This also results in approximately 60% of clothing being discarded within just 12 months of being manufactured.
Fast fashion brands such as Shein and Zara have increased the production and sale of cheap clothing adding further fuel to the carbon footprint fire.
All these factors are compounded by the rise of the fast fashion industry, global production, and cheap plastic fiber. As a result, the fashion industry has grown into a multi-trillion sector that also generates nearly 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, as other sectors increase their carbon footprint, the fashion industry is on track to generate nearly 25% of the world’s global carbon budget by 2050 according to industry predictions.

Levi Strauss has enhanced its sustainability plans by adopting a circular economy concept that promotes recycling. Their 501 jeans are now made with 40% fiber.Renewcelland 60% organic cotton. This practice also includes all parts of the jeans including the red tab, seams, labeling and back patch.
Adidas has plans to completely switch to recycled polyester by the end of 2023 and sooner than their original goal of 2024.
This major development is just part of the battle to save the planet, as consumers need to change their behavior when shopping for clothes and throwing them away. The drive for greater awareness and acceptance or responsibility also needs to permeate the social fabric at a much deeper level.
The final piece of the puzzle is how laws enforcing new measures help reduce waste disposal and promote recyclable materials.
For example, the State of New York has undertaken a Fashion Act to help regulate the fashion company’s recycling practices.
The future of the fashion retail industry and our planet has evolved like never before, and the right actions need to be taken sooner rather than later.
