Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), One of two Republicans on a select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, said on Sunday he supported the subpoena of leading House Republicans to strip cover details about the role of former President Donald Trumps in the unrest, the latest example of congressmen in Illinois rising distancing themselves from his own party.

Kinzinger said in an interview with ABC This Week he would support subpoenaing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Judiciary Committee member Jim Jordan, who both had phone calls with Trump during the attack.
The committee has not yet announced who will be subpoenaed, but Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), The panel chair, said they were willing to put up a wide net and act quickly to force testimony from possible sources that were not sought.
Kinzinger, a vocal critic of Trump who, along with Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Was assigned to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s panel, that she wants to know what Trump is doing every moment of that day, and will support subpoenas to do that.
McCarthy and other Republicans have expressed outrage at the willingness of Kinzingers and Cheneys to push their own party, not only by taking committee assignments from Pelosi but by actively criticizing GOP leaders in January 6.
Kinzinger, on Sunday, aimed at McCarthy and House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik blaming Pelosi for the attack, rather than Trump, saying, All Donald Trump should see is your defense, no matter how silly .

Members of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus pushed for the House Republican Conference to change its rules to remove Cheney and Kinzinger from their committee assignments. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) Told Forbes that he believes there are enough votes within the conference for that to happen even if Pelosi re-appoints them to their respective panels.
