Donald Trump arrested: DOJ provides preliminary evidence against former president in classified documents case

Former President Donald Trump’s legal team has been given the first batch of evidence obtained during its Mar-a-Lago search.

Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team turned over some material the government wanted to use in its case, including documents and evidence obtained through subpoenas, searches, or grand jury testimony; documents and photographs; complete copies of closed-circuit television footage; and the testimonies of people who will testify for the government.

The court filing says the evidence provided “includes the grand jury testimony of witnesses who testified for the government in the trial of this case” and “any payment, promise of immunity, leniency, preferential treatment, or other inducement that made to prospective government witnesses.”

The evidence could direct Trump’s anger at some people who work for him if they testify against him without his knowledge.

Smith’s indictment alleges that Trump knowingly and intentionally mishandled classified documents after he left the White House and refused efforts to return them to the National Archives. The government says he retained 31 documents related to sensitive defense secrets, from nuclear programs to attack plans, sharing them with people without clearance on at least two occasions, and personally involved in the decision to stop them.

Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has maintained his innocence, and his legal team has said he will not take a plea deal.
