Radmor Rage Against Golf Quick Mode Machine

[ad_1]

Golf is a sport of strategic decision-making: conservative course management can dictate layups or safe play on some holes, while dangerous challenges can pay off on others.

Careful choices tend to pay off and Seattle-based beginner golf fashion continues Radmor is relying on careful choices that extend to the shirts golfers choose to wear on their backs. By designing the top and bottom to be biodegradable or derived from regenerative or recycled resources, Radmor hopes to reduce its environmental impact from 81lbs of textile waste it is estimated that the average American throws away every year which is then either burned or thrown in landfills.

Company founders Scott Morrison and Bob Conrad both played college golf for the University of Washington in the 1990s, the same program that propelled Joel Dahmen and Nick Taylor to PGA Tour stars. A veteran of the fashion industry, Morrison has spent the past two decades making waves in the denim world. He launched a trio of brands: 3 X 1, Earnest Sewing and Denim and Cloth, all of which he has released. Meanwhile, Conrad kept his golf career going after his time with the Huskies. He worked the development tour for six years, hitting what became known as the National circuit before settling into a career selling commercial real estate.

The idea of partnering up in a golf thread venture was originally floated back when teammates lived in the same dorm, but back then it was just a strange idea. Early in 2020 when Morrison moved back to the Pacific Northwest, the wheels started turning.

We want it to be something unique, something different. We love fashion but in the world of golf, we’ve never seen anyone talk about sustainability which is something Scott taught me over the last six years of his denim career, says Conrad.

The entire fashion industry, not just premium denim and high fashion, but also Levis, the GapsGPS
, the Banana Republics, H&Mseveryone is starting to really at least talk about their future commitments around sustainability and how challenging and polluting the clothing industry is, explains Morrison. Virgin polyester is still the most widely consumed and used product and material in golf apparel and no brand is truly dedicated to talking about using recycled or biodegradable materials, Morrison added.

The duo was surprised that for the most part, the golf industry has largely avoided uncomfortable conversations about the high carbon footprint of pure petroleum-based micro-plastic discharge fabrics. The main offenders are the four-way stretch, sweat-wicking polyester and spandex that dominate the golf apparel market.

Just as mission-driven brands got the ball rolling, Covid and the associated sourcing and supply chain tensions hit hard and Radmor ended up delaying their debut to February 2021, but two years into the game they are now honing their approach and starting to carve. out niche.

Striving to be a better steward of the environment, Radmor is committed to sustainable practices and does more than talk. Their clothing uses natural shell buttons and is made of cellulose fibers such as very long Peruvian pima cotton. When they use synthetic materials, such as rain-resistant clothing, recyclable materials are used whenever possible. This ethos extends to their packaging, opting to incur higher costs to ship their products in reusable polybags and their hangtags and straps that tie them together are made from 100% recycled paper.

Most of the golf clothing brands that have hatched in recent years have relied on funky prints or streetwear to attract a new generation of players just getting into the game. While Radmor also plays for that alluring and attractive demographic, they stand out by not being a hardball brand of polo. Instead, the look is much more muted and rooted in 1990s nostalgia. Morrison believes their contrarian design aesthetic, the antithesis of what their fast fashion competitors offer, caters to those who value the quality that goes into making a product designed to last and feel confident enough to be able to wear something with a more subtle vibe that doesn’t catch the eye. on yourself.

More than anything, what we really appreciate are golf clothes that don’t necessarily feel or look like golf clothes. Our color palette tends to come from menswear and European fashion shows more than your traditional red, white and blue Americana brands that the golf industry is quite familiar with, he says.

Our shirts, polo’s, pants and sweaters are almost seasonless. It’s part of sustainability too, making something high quality that lasts a long, long time, so they won’t get bored when the next bright color comes in the next season. Hopefully our polo can last many years [our customers] wardrobe, Conrad added

Nearly half of Radmors’ direct-to-consumer sales with balances come from the 75-100 pro stores nationwide as well as Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and several third-party online retailers that also carry the brand.

Radmor hired three full-time sales associates a few months ago to focus on growing their grass-green footprint which they expect to reach 200-250 accounts by the end of 2023. In the coming months, their newly launched women’s collection will take center stage. at the upcoming PGA Merchandise Show in January and a key focus across all of their regional markets.

There really isn’t a specific brand of golf for women that uses natural fibers. Almost every brand is based on polyester, nylon or synthetics. So, there was no choice in the pro shop and we learned about it from different buyers, said Conrad.

Radmor hopes the mission-driven example they’ve created creates such a shift in the industry that brands no longer just give lip service to sustainable clothing but decide to make it a more meaningful part of their releases.

I think what you’re really going to start to see is bigger brands starting to adopt more sustainable practices and materials into their collections, says Morrison. He hopes all the practices they’ve adopted set a gold standard for what the industry will be like in fifteen years.
